GeoWebWorks

Ethical Web Design, etc.

Welcome to GeoWebWorks, my most neglected website and, in many ways, the most unusual.

Yes, I am hanging out my shingle as a freelance web designer. However I have never pursued that goal with zeal as my real passion lies in writing. First and foremost, I’m what you might call a web publisher.

I am available for web design projects. My portfolio consists of my personal websites, headquartered at Geobop.

My skills include CSS, JavaScript, PHP and MySQL databases. I do not consider myself a programming guru, but I’m good enough for simple to intermediate projects. If you want an e-commerce site, I’m not the person you’re looking for.

Nor am I a big fan of anything related to Microsoft. I favor open source software, though I also embrace corporate software as long as it’s high quality and produced by a corporation I consider reasonably “clean” (i.e. not corrupt).

My platform consists of a Mac (recently upgraded to Leopard), with Apache, PHP and MySQL running on MAMP Pro. My primary web design program is Dreamweaver, part of the Adobe Creative Suite package I recently purchased.

What Is Ethical Web Design?

My kneejerk response to that question is “Web design that’s totally divorced from Microsoft!”

Unfortunately, that’s unrealistic, as, like it or not, Microsoft is seemingly everywhere, like an electronic cancer. Since most people still surf the Internet with Microsoft’s embattled Internet Explorer (IE) browser, most web designers insist that professionally designed web pages must display properly in IE, along with quality browsers (e.g. Firefox, Opera and Safari).

But that’s about as far as I’ll go in bowing to Microsoft. In fact, I’m a little peeved at web designers for failing so miserably to stand up to Bill Gates. If you take a close look at my web pages, you’ll see numerous reminders and incentives to follow Microsoft’s lead and abandon “Internet Exploder” in favor of a good browser(s).

Etc.?

OK, GeoWebWorks is more than an advertisement for my web design business. As time allows, I hope to develop it into what you might call a high-tech reference, focusing on computers, software, web design and the Internet. It will include articles and tutorials for budding web designers and net surfers.

As you might have guessed, it will also be somewhat political in nature. There will be some overlap with my other high-tech website, Freedomware. However, GeoWebWorks is more oriented towards a general audience. Freedomware is for mature adults only.

Below is a list of some of the articles I’m currently working on:

• Finding the Right Platform
• Mac vs PC
• Choosing Software
• How Bad is Microsoft?
• Browser Wars
• Why Linux is a Loser
• The Endangered Internet
• How to Ask Questions
• How to Answer Questions
• What Does it Take to Learn Web Design?

Eventually, I’ll have links to many quality references from various pages on this site. Allow me to get the ball rolling by directing you to SitePoint’s new CSS Reference.
